Officers’ Quarters, Patch Barracks (U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart-Vaihingen)

Redesigned Entryways for Historic Housing

Patch Barracks is a U.S. Army base in Stuttgart-Vaihingen, where extensive outdoor areas have already been redesigned in previous years. In 2022, the entrance areas of the officers' residences were updated to meet the specific security and operational requirements of the U.S. military.
The house forecourts were entirely repaved and each was supplemented with an additional parking space. Existing privacy screening around waste enclosures was selectively removed and incorporated into the new design. While the original path layout was preserved, it was extended to provide direct connections to the new parking areas. This resulted in two clearly defined lawn areas, where all healthy existing trees were retained.
Material selection was guided by the original site design: granite edging and light concrete pavers form the primary surfaces, while the new parking spaces were constructed using silver-gray permeable pavers. Walkways leading to the entrances and parking were laid with a contrasting black-and-white interlocking paver system and bordered with granite bands.
