A Village Square for Everyone
As part of the new construction of the community center and the redesign of the village square in Arzfeld, the planning competition sought ideas for a new, identity-shaping village center. The aim of our open-space design was to create a cohesive, vibrant public space by using a clear design language and integrating the topography. This new spatial structure functionally and aesthetically links the community center with the festival square and the surrounding open spaces.
Our design frames the community center with a generous green structure that fits naturally into the terrain. Intuitive pathways and a sequence of small squares provide orientation and high-quality places to linger. The existing trees are preserved and complemented by targeted new plantings. The festival square forms the communicative heart of the site: a flexible outdoor area suitable for a wide range of events—from large festival tents to smaller cultural and social formats.
Towards the main road, the space connects at ground level, while a topographic step is accentuated by a generous, barrier-free stair arrangement. A spacious playground expands the offer for families. The existing fountain is retained as a distinctive entrance marker and links the new village square with the outdoor areas of the nearby St. Maria Magdalena church.
With a few precisely placed design elements, a clear and user-oriented open-space structure emerges. The project strengthens the new “Arzfeld Center” as a social and cultural meeting place and provides an important impulse for the ongoing development of the village core.
