New Protestant Community Center, Stuttgart-Feuerbach

A green ribbon of community

In the heart of Stuttgart-Feuerbach’s historic town center, a new community center is being built that, together with the listed church, the parish house, and the newly designed open spaces, forms a lively and welcoming ensemble. At von K, we developed the open space concept, which strengthens the site as a distinctive address and creates inviting spaces for gathering, contemplation, and community.
The centerpiece of our design is the hybrid-use churchyard square. While fulfilling functional requirements such as access and parking, it becomes an attractive place to spend time and linger. Benches, planting beds, and a clear zoning structure define the square and invite people to stay. The church and community hall are oriented toward the square with a welcoming gesture, forming a new focal point for the parish that is fully accessible from Walterstraße.The pathways are intuitive and short, with barrier-free access to all buildings. Carefully placed spatial edges create clearly defined outdoor areas that provide orientation and allow for a variety of uses. To the north, a quiet parish garden complements the ensemble as a green retreat with seating areas, bicycle parking, and a direct connection to the parish house. At the corner of Walterstraße and Mohrenhof, a green meeting point marks the entrance to the new community center. This space can also serve as an extension of the adjacent hall for festivals and events. Valuable existing trees are largely preserved and complemented by new, climate-resilient plantings.
The result is an open, green, and future-oriented outdoor space that links the church, community house, and neighborhood – a place-shaping ribbon of community that sustainably strengthens the heart of Feuerbach.
