Modern and harmonious center
For the market square in Erlenbach, we developed a contemporary open-space concept that respects the historic town center while creating a sustainable, vibrant urban environment.
The central design element is the reintroduction of the Erlenbach stream through a carefully shaped watercourse with an integrated fountain field. This staged water feature enhances the visitor experience, brings the namesake stream back into the townscape, and improves the microclimate through evaporative cooling. The square’s surfaces are designed with light-colored concrete pavers in warm tones, echoing the base of the town hall. This clear material concept creates a homogeneous, barrier-free space with reduced heat buildup and improved acoustic comfort. Along the edges, arena paving with grass joints provides natural transitions and supports local rainwater infiltration.
A diverse planting concept featuring insect-friendly perennial mixes, new tree plantings, and mobile planters introduces seasonal dynamics and promotes biodiversity. Modular seating elements made of steel and oak, complemented by illuminated community benches, create an inviting and safe atmosphere. Mobile furnishings also enable flexible use—especially for the town’s large annual wine festival.
The result is a harmonious, identity-forming urban space that combines versatility with a high quality of stay.
