The City of Schwelm is planning a new combined indoor and outdoor swimming complex on the site of the existing open-air pool. For the competition, we complemented the architectural concept by mra Architekten with our landscape design. The central element is a nature-inspired park with abundant greenery. The Schwelme stream is to be uncovered, renaturalized, and ecologically enhanced with planted islands and natural stone features.
Curving paths follow the topography of the so-called “Liebeswiese” (Lovers’ Meadow), gently climbing the hillside and leading to flat lounging areas with varied light conditions. The transition between the swimming area and the slope is creatively designed as a sun terrace. Much of the existing tree population will be preserved and supplemented with native, insect-friendly plantings. Retaining walls are designed as dry stone walls, creating habitats for local fauna. The path network connects the higher terrace zones and offers fine-grained access with high-quality places to stay.
