Lots of space to run around
The City of Felsberg is planning a new six-group kindergarten, for which we developed a holistic, movement-enhancing outdoor environment as part of our competition proposal. The garden unfolds across three harmoniously interlinked areas: a versatile over-3s zone featuring climbing and water-play landscapes, discovery areas and an edible garden; a well-supervised, pleasantly shaded under-3s area with a protected play lawn, generous sand spaces and small sensory gardens; and a central courtyard that connects the two zones and offers comb-shaped movement spaces encouraging playful activity. The outdoor programme is complemented by an event meadow and the gentle refurbishment of the existing volleyball court, which will serve users of all ages.
A key design objective was to preserve the valuable existing trees. Additional site-appropriate plantings will create natural shade over time, while artificial shading is intentionally limited to the spacious terrace areas. Sealed surfaces are reduced to the essential minimum. A barrier-free circular path provides full access throughout the site and doubles as a discreet maintenance route. All remaining areas are designed as richly planted green and sand spaces that are ecologically sensitive and offer diverse opportunities for play and exploration.
