City on the River – Connectivity Concept for Stuttgart-Untertürkheim – 2nd Prize

Neckar riverbank newly reconnected

The goal of this competition was to reconnect Stuttgart-Untertürkheim’s historic town center with the Neckar River and to transform the previously isolated spaces between city and river into an innovative, urban neighborhood. Key considerations included experimental building and housing types near the water, the integration of the historic hydroelectric power station, and the removal of separating infrastructure around Karl-Benz-Platz, including potential temporary uses.

Our concept proposes a new urban axis between the old town and the river. Karl-Benz-Platz is spatially framed by an elevated, multifunctional “IBA House,” under which the light rail line is routed. The space around it accommodates essential local services. Opening up the upper canal further enhances the site’s qualities. The Mercedes-Benz area is anchored by a new architectural landmark, offering flexible functions such as a tech hub, boarding house, and restaurants. Residential units atop the existing “Puritas Building” increase urban density in a meaningful way. Along the Neckar, new landmarks such as the “Neckarturm” tower, an elevated walkway, and new public spaces create identity and civic engagement.

The jury praised the concept of connecting city and river through two architectural highlights and saw it as a valuable stimulus for Untertürkheim’s continued development. The successful integration of existing structures and the enhancement of public spaces were particularly well received.
