Between Village and Forest
The municipality of Waldbronn is planning the construction of a new three-group daycare center with an integrated multifunctional community room on Kirchstraße in the Etzenrot district. The collaborative competition design positions the slender, two-story building along the street, making use of the existing plateau of the former structure. This creates a spacious, cohesive outdoor area to the southwest that opens atmospherically toward the forest edge and the adjacent meadow valley - reminiscent of a woodland clearing.
With future summers in mind, the design offers ideal conditions for shading and solar gains. The functional layout is clearly structured: while the community area is oriented toward the village, the daycare group rooms open generously to the outdoor play area facing the forest. Both the foyer and the main entrance engage closely with the surrounding landscape, creating a strong connection between inside and outside. A recessed terrace provides an additional outdoor and transition space for the over-three group and the community room.
The jury praised the design for its topography-responsive placement, straightforward architectural layout, and successful integration into the surrounding landscape. The project creates a sensitive architectural dialogue with the neighboring church and the adjacent open spaces—forming a place for community life between forest clearing, woodland, and meadow valley.
