Blauer See, Ratingen – 2. Prize

Powerful place with experience value

Situated at the edge of a woodland, in the transition between town and nature, the Blaue See is a place rich in history and full of potential for the future. The competition called for a sustainable, forward-looking open-space concept that enhances ecological quality, supports environmental education and creates new recreational opportunities. The lake and its surroundings are to be rediscovered as an attractive, identity-shaping destination for all generations.
Our revitalisation concept takes a long-term perspective, merging nature, education and leisure into a diverse and immersive landscape experience. The design focuses on ecological diversity, climate adaptation and resource-efficient construction. The outdoor spaces are characterised by circular material strategies, extensive de-sealing and an integrated rainwater management system that supports the natural water cycle. A finely tuned path network with barrier-free access points ensures that visitors of all ages can easily explore the area. Car-free zones enhance tranquillity and safety. Succession areas, deadwood habitats, green roofs and façades, as well as nesting structures for bats, birds and insects, promote biodiversity and make ecological processes visible.
At the heart of the concept lies the Environmental Education Centre—an inviting place of learning and discovery. Natural materials, interactive stations, information panels and digital tools communicate knowledge about local wildlife, plant species and the history of the Blaue See. A smart lighting concept with motion-controlled LED fixtures ensures safety during dusk and evening hours—energy-efficient, insect-friendly and precisely attuned to the needs of the site.
