Play spaces blending old and new

For the partial renovation of the outdoor area at the Schafhof Kindergarten, we created a versatile play landscape that integrates seamlessly into the existing environment while offering children new spaces for exploration and discovery. Our approach focused on thoughtfully evolving the existing structures and materials to form a cohesive design that balances the old with the new. A generous, contemporary paving layout connected the various play zones, structured the open areas and ensured robust, everyday usability. At the heart of the design lies a small lawn island with a circular bench under a cherry tree – a green retreat for resting, observing and playing in the shade. An amber tree adds seasonal highlights throughout the year. New play and movement elements such as climbing beams, seating steps and an expanded sand and water play area with hand pump, mud table and boulders offer diverse stimuli for motor skills, creativity and imaginative play. A sheltered mud kitchen extends the play opportunities regardless of the weather. Play walls, including a “gas station” and a multifunctional panel, complement the existing equipment and spark children's imagination. The outdoor area was further enhanced with a ball play court featuring an elastic EPDM surface, marked parking spaces for children's vehicles and shade sails to improve comfort on hot days. A new parking area on the southern side completed the functional upgrades. The result is a play environment that harmoniously connects existing structures with new elements – inviting, stimulating and designed to accompany children for many years.
