Josef-Schwarz School, Heilbronn

Temporary schoolyard

For the temporary campus of the Josef-Schwarz School on the Heilbronn Education Campus, we transformed the outdoor areas into a flexible, child-friendly schoolyard. Our aim was to deliver a high-quality yet economical and environmentally conscious interim solution that meets the demands of modern school life.
The paved surfaces were constructed using permeable concrete, a material well-suited to both temporary use and sustainability. The existing trees—especially the distinctive birch trees—were largely preserved. To protect and highlight them, we installed leaf-shaped tree grates planted with hardy, two-toned ornamental grasses. This design balances function and aesthetics while allowing the space to be easily reverted to its original use in the future.
Stormwater management was another key focus. Through strategic grading and the use of water-permeable materials, the entire area was designed without the need for additional drainage systems.
The redesigned outdoor space offers elementary school students a wide range of play and activity options. Interactive play boards, ground games, trampolines, and a carousel encourage both cognitive and motor development, creating a vibrant and engaging recess environment.
