Nature-Inspired Play on a Hillside

The outdoor area of the St. Paulus daycare center in Talheim had become outdated and required a comprehensive redesign. The steep hillside location presented both a challenge and an opportunity. We embraced the site's natural topography to create new play spaces, especially for children over the age of three. A slide and a large climbing structure beneath the existing trees allow children to safely explore the treetops and develop their motor skills. The steep slope was integrated into the design and accentuated with additional slides.

For younger children, we created a separate play zone themed around “gardening,” featuring a wooden tractor, swing, and a small “vineyard village” made of timber playhouses to inspire creative role play. A construction-themed play area with a mobile site trailer, sand digger, and water station further expands the play offerings for older kids.

Existing play equipment in good condition, along with the outdoor oven and equipment shed, were preserved and incorporated into the new layout. A key priority was to preserve the valuable tree stock and to carefully integrate new play elements into the small forest setting.

The adjacent terrace was also enhanced with a small wooden seating tier that blends naturally into the slope. The result is a multi-functional outdoor space that promotes age-appropriate play, movement, and shared experiences.
