New Daycare Center in Göppingen – 2nd Prize

Rethinking daycare

The City of Göppingen is planning a new three-group daycare center on the grounds of the Albert Schweitzer and Pestalozzi schools, forming a unified campus with the existing educational facilities. We complemented the building design by Joos Keller Architekten with our landscape architecture concept.

The exterior design reflects the architectural language of the new structure, creating a cohesive dialogue between building and landscape. The building’s transverse orientation generates an engaging relationship with the neighboring school buildings while the adjacent schoolyard to the north receives a well-defined spatial edge. A central design goal was to strongly connect interior and exterior spaces: a paved area extending from the middle wing of the building leads into the outdoor spaces, forming a forecourt with seating to the northwest and a terrace to the southeast.

Linear hedges and furnishings follow the building’s geometry, reinforcing the overall design concept. The pathways build on existing circulation routes and were carefully optimized. A newly aligned footpath to the east increases distance from the surrounding road and enlarges the adjacent daycare garden. This garden provides a natural and stimulating environment with diverse play elements, varied surfacing, and planting areas. Targeted new plantings also create natural shade. The landscape design follows the site’s topography and ensures full accessibility despite the sloped terrain. A newly created “Kiss & Ride” zone along the Ringstraße improves connectivity and enhances safety for drop-offs and pickups.
